Hi Eddie. That depends on the circumstances of their departure. In Matthew 19:3 the Pharisees came to Jesus tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? They were referring to Deuteronomy 24:1-4. Here's how Deuteronomy 24:1-4 reads. "When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house. And when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man's wife. And if the latter husband hate her, and write her a bill of divorcement, and giveth it in her hand, and sendeth her out of his house; or if the latter husband die, which took her to be his wife; Her former husband, which sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after that she is defiled; for that is abomination before the LORD: and thou shalt not cause the land to sin, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance. Jesus answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female. The Pharisees asked "Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? Jesus goes on to say in Matthew 19:8-9 "Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. He said "because of the hardness of their hearts he suffered them to put away their wives: In verses 9 of Matthew 19 he says, "And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, EXCEPT IT BE FOR FORNICATION, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery. (Also see; Matthew 5:32.) (except it be for fornication) is suffered because the hardness of man's heart is the defining point. However this is not what was intended or considered in the beginning! ( What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.) The Deuteronomy passages speaks on a strict economy the Law put the Israelites under and Jesus answered them concerning their weakness and fornication being why it was suffered then and is "SUFFERED" now! (Divorcement.) Note; Remarriage was permissible. However the woman put away, after Remarriage couldn't return back to her first husband in that economy. I believe the innocent party Remarriage is suffered today. And I also believe the guilty party can repent and be forgiven and also re-marry receiving the mercy and grace of God given and applied to all other shortcomings from a repented and confessing sinner. The question you asked relevance is on the Remarriage to the same spouse, I believe is seen through God's eyes looking into your hearts and vows rather than man's legal docs. Marriage should model Christ relationship to the Church and should be inseparable. It should communicate to us Christ love for his bride with the man being the head and anchor full of everlasting mercy for the weaker vessel. However some fail at that. This expectation is of believers! I hope this helps. God bless.

Hi S Spencer, I agree with much that you’ve said here. Jesus tells us there is only one sin that we can’t be forgiven, and it isn’t adultery. Jesus came to save sinners ….ALL sinners. God want’s us to repent, and change…including after Divorce. I believe the bible scriptures reinforces that we can be forgiven for a divorce and repent, and move on with our lives. I think one of the big sticking points with moving on with life after divorce is…..Can divorced Christians get remarried? I believe they can. GB

Hi Jordan. I agree with you however when I encounter someone who asks about divorcement or is considering it I don't share that with them. Instead I ask them are they born again and I show them in the scriptures what that marriage should be like. Ephesians 5:25-28 is my main portion of scripture I use! It reads, "Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. Husbands must love their wives with a deep, selfless, and sacrificial love that mirrors how Christ loves the church. "Verses 31-33" For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband. To reverence your husband means to venerate, highly value, or deeply respect. It views the husband as an appointed leader or representative in the home, mirroring the respect given to Christ by the church. And the Husband should have a sacrificial love for his bride! This is what the Spirit of Christ has supernaturally joined together that they two shall be one flesh. If so there should be no divorce ever considered under any circumstances. Blessings.

S Spencer, Amen. Well said, and the scripture speaks volumes regarding the importance of the Christian’s marital relationship. GB
